The nominees for the 2025 Olivier Award for Best New Musical have been revealed, celebrating a diverse lineup of productions that have left a significant mark on the West End.

The Best New Musical nominees are:

Leading the nominations is Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, the Donmar Warehouse’s ambitious staging of Dave Malloy’s electro-pop opera, with six nods. In addition to Best New Musical, the production has received nominations for Outstanding Musical Contribution and Best Lighting, with Jamie Muscato (Best Actor in a Musical), Chumisa Dornford-May (Best Actress in a Musical), and Maimuna Memon (Best Supporting Actress in a Musical) all recognized for their performances.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, currently playing at the Ambassadors Theatre until 30 August, has received four nominations, including Best New Musical. Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story, Jethro Compton’s adaptation relocates the tale to Cornwall, set against a foot-stomping folk score by Darren Clark. The production’s actor-musician cast is led by John Dagleish and Clare Foster, both nominated for Best Actor/Actress in a Musical, alongside a nod for Outstanding Musical Contribution (Darren Clark & Mark Aspinall).

Also in contention is MJ The Musical, the Broadway hit now dazzling audiences at the Prince Edward Theatre. The show, which chronicles the life and music of Michael Jackson, has earned three nominations, including Best New Musical. Christopher Wheeldon is nominated for Best Theatre Choreographer, while Myles Frost, who originated the title role, is nominated for Best Actor in a Musical.

Rounding out the category is Why Am I So Single?, the latest show from Six creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, which had a short run at the Garrick Theatre.

Best Musical Revival

This year’s Best Musical Revival category is equally competitive, featuring four acclaimed productions:

Fiddler on the Roof at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre
Hello, Dolly! at the London Palladium
Oliver! at the Gielgud Theatre
Starlight Express at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s celebrated revival of Fiddler on the Roof—which is set to transfer to the Barbican Theatre later this year & has received a total of 13 nominations—faces stiff competition from Hello, Dolly!, the London Palladium production led by Imelda Staunton.

Also nominated is Cameron Mackintosh’s bold reimagining of Oliver!, which transferred from Chichester Festival Theatre to the Gielgud Theatre in late 2024. Completing the lineup is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express, a newly staged version currently thrilling audiences at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre.

The 2025 Olivier Awards ceremony will take place on 6 April at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Beverley Knight and Billy Porter.
