The Crown star Elizabeth Debicki is joining the cast of Michael Grandage’s world premiere production of My Master Builder
Full casting has been announced for the world premiere of new play My Master Builder, starring award-winning actor Ewan McGregor.
Directed by Michael Grandage, My Master Builder will run at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London from 17 April to 12 July 2025.
The play is by American playwright and screenwriter Lila Raicek, and is inspired by Ibsen’s classic drama The Master Builder.
Joining Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge) in the cast is Emmy and Golden Globe winner Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown, The Great Gatsby) as Mathilde, Tony and Olivier Award nominee Kate Fleetwood (The Wheel of Time, A View from the Bridge, Bath and West End; 101 Dalmatians, Regent’s Park) as Elena, David Ajala (One Night in Miami, Donmar Warehouse) as Ragnar, and Mirren Mack (The Grapes of Wrath, National Theatre) as Kaja.
My Master Builder promises to be a very modern take on the original drama, set in the Hamptons on the eve of the 4th of July.
Elena Solness is a publishing magnate, about to throw a party to celebrate her husband, architect Henry Solness, as he unveils his latest building masterpiece. Their already vulnerable marriage is completely shattered by the unexpected arrival of Mathilde, a former student of Henry’s, with whom he previously shared an intimate connection. As the evening unfolds, each find themselves face to face with a reckoning that indelibly tilts the axis of their lives.
Michael Grandage (Disney’s Frozen, Orlando, My Policeman) and Ewan McGregor have worked together on a number of other theatre projects, including Othello and Guys and Dolls, both at the Donmar Warehouse when Grandage was Artistic Director.
There are also rumours that My Master Builder will be heading to Broadway with Ewan McGregor, although no details have been revealed.
Ewan McGregor is most famous for his film work, including Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, Star Wars, Brassed Off, Black Hawk Down, Angels & Demons, and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. On TV, Ewan’s credits include A Gentleman in Moscow, Halston, and Fargo.
Australian actor Elizabeth Debicki, is best known for playing Diana Princess of Wales in hit Netflix series The Crown. She last appeared on the London stage in 2016 at the National Theatre in The Red Barn. Her other credits include Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.
Joining Michael Grandage in the creative team are: Set and costume designer Richard Kent, lighting designer Paule Constable, composer and sound designer Adam Cork, casting director Sophie Holland, associate director Bethany West, production manager Kate West, costume supervisor Lisa Aitken, and props supervisor Kate Margretts.
The play is produced by Michael Grandage Productions (Orlando, Backstairs Billy), John Brant’s MarketStall Productions (Macbeth starring Ralph Fiennes) and Seaview Productions (Stereophonic, Romeo + Juliet starring Kit Connor, Once Upon a Mattress).
