Sophie McShera, best known for her role as Daisy Mason in the hit series Downton Abbey, is set to star in the London premiere of Shucked, a hilarious new musical comedy. The Broadway sensation will run for a strictly limited season at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre from 10 May to 14 June 2025.
McShera last appeared on the London stage in Kenneth Branagh’s 2016 revival of The Entertainer at the Garrick Theatre. Other stage credits include Jerusalem starring Mark Rylance at the Royal Court, Annie in the West End and A Month in the Country at Salisbury Playhouse. Her television work spans acclaimed series such as The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix), Inside No. 9 (BBC), and Galavant (ABC). On the big screen, she has appeared in Downton Abbey: A New Era, Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, and David Copperfield.
Sophie will play the leading role of Maizy alongside rising West End star Ben Joyce – most recently seen as Marty McFly in Back to The Future at the Adelphi Theatre – as Beau. The super-talented Georgina Onuorah (Kiss Me, Kate; Hamilton; Oklahoma!; Palladium panto Dick Whittington; Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bad Cinderella; The Wizard of Oz) will take on the role of Lulu.
Initial casting also includes: Monique Ashe-Palmer (Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Six), Keith Ramsay (The Play That Goes Wrong), Matthew Seadon-Young (The Baker’s Wife, Company) & Steven Webb (Here You Come Again, The Inbetweeners).
A Broadway Smash Hit Comes to London
Nominated for 9 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Shucked has taken Broadway by storm with its clever humor, unforgettable music, and a fresh, feel-good story. Written by Tony Award winner Robert Horn (Tootsie), featuring a score by Grammy-winning duo Brandy Clark & Shane McAnally, and directed by Jack O’Brien (Hairspray), this show promises a wildly entertaining night out.
What’s Shucked About?
Maizy and Beau are about to get married when disaster strikes—the corn that protects their small town starts to die. Someone must save Cob County, but who will venture beyond its borders? The result is a riotous mix of unexpected twists, an unlikely hero, a scheming con artist, and a toe-tapping soundtrack that will leave audiences hooked.
Featuring hit songs such as Woman of the World, Somebody Will, and Independently Owned, Shucked combines Broadway energy with sharp satire, reminiscent of The Book of Mormon, Oklahoma!, and The Music Man.
