Star of stage and screen Cate Blanchett is returning to the London stage this winter, to star as Arkadina in a new production of Chekhov’s play The Seagull.
The Seagull will run at the Barbican Theatre in London for a limited six week season from February 2025.
The production will also star Tom Burke (Strike, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) as Trigorin.
It will be first time Oscar winner Blanchett (The Aviator, Carol, Tar, Notes on a Scandal, Ocean’s 8) has acted in London since When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other at the National Theatre six years ago. She last performed on the Barbican stage in 2012 in Big and Small (Gross und Klein).
Thomas Ostermeier is set to direct. Ostermeier recently directed Matt Smith in An Enemy of the People at the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre.
Thomas Ostermeier’s other productions of The Seagull include at Toneelgroep Amsterdam theatre in 2013, and Berlin’s Schaubühne in 2023.
This new production of Chekhov’s classic is adapted by Duncan Macmillan and Thomas Ostermeier, with Chekhov’s timeless story unfolding in a gripping tale of vanity, power, and the sacrifices made in the name of art.
The Seagull in London will reunite Blanchett and Burke following their roles in Steven Soderbergh’s forthcoming film Black Bag.
Tom Burke’s other theatre credits include Rosmersholm at the Duke of York’s Theatre in 2019 alongside Hayley Atwell.
The Seagull will be produced by Wessex Grove, who also produced An Enemy of the People, Macbeth starring Ralph Fiennes, and Sheridan Smith in Opening Night; and Gavin Kalin Productions (Sunset Boulevard, Vanya, A Little Life).
The Seagull takes place over a weekend at the country estate of celebrated actress Arkadina, played by Cate Blanchett, who has a larger-than-life presence that dominates both the stage and her personal relationships.
During the weekend she finds herself caught up in a storm of conflicting desires. Her playwright son, Konstantin, struggles to step out of her shadow as he pursues his own artistic ambitions and her lover Trigorin, played by Tom Burke, becomes the object of affection for the aspiring young actress Nina.
Director Thomas Ostermeier said in a statement: “I have known and admired Cate for many years, and to see her on stage is always a privilege. I am thrilled that we will make our first artistic collaboration with this production of The Seagull at the Barbican, and that London will experience this once in a generation actress in one of the greatest theatrical roles of Arkadina. I’m also very pleased to be forging a new artistic relationship with Tom Burke, who will play the role of Trigorin.”
