Oscar winning actor Cate Blanchett stars in a major new production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Barbican Theatre in 2025.

Directed by Thomas Ostermeier (An Enemy of the People), this thrilling new production of Chekhov’s classic drama The Seagull is adapted by Ostermeier and Duncan Macmillan.

Cate Blanchett (The Aviator, Tar, Carol) stars as Arkadina, a celebrated actress whose larger-than-life presence dominates both the stage and her personal relationships.

Arriving at her family’s country estate for the weekend, she finds herself caught up in a storm of conflicting desires. Her playwright son, Konstantin, struggles to step out of her shadow as he pursues his own artistic ambitions and her lover Trigorin, played by Tom Burke (Strike, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), becomes the object of affection for the aspiring young actress Nina.

As their lives entwine and they each grapple with their desires, ambitions, and disappointments, Chekhov’s timeless story unfolds in a gripping tale of vanity, power, and the sacrifices made in the name of art.

Cate Blanchett and Tom Burke are joined by an extraordinary cast including Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin (The Crown, Orlando) as Nina, BAFTA winner Jason Watkins (W1A, The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies) as Sorin, Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education, A Mirror) as Masha, Olivier Award nominee Priyanga Burford (An Enemy of the People) as Polina, Zachary Hart (The Constituent, Slow Horses) as Medvedenko, Paul Higgins (Romeo and Juliet, The Doctor) as Shamrayev, Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) as Konstantin, and Paul Bazely (The Father and the Assassin, Benidorm) as Dr Dorn.

The Seagull is playing at the Barbican Theatre from 26 February to 5 April 2025.

The Seagull takes place over a weekend at the country estate of celebrated actress Arkadina, played by Cate Blanchett. Tensions mount as her son Treplev struggles to escape Arkadina’s shadow. During the weekend, Arkadina’s lover and famous writer Trigorin, played by Tom Burke, becomes the romantic target of an aspiring young actress.
