Stephen Sondheim musical Follies is coming to the big screen.

The new movie of Follies will be directed by Dominic Cooke, who directed the acclaimed National Theatre production in 2017 starring Imelda Staunton, Gary Raymond, Tracie Bennett, Philip Quast, Janie Dee, Zizi Strallen and Peter Forbes.

Follies will be a co-production between Heyday Films and BBC Films, and is currently in production.

Heyday’s David Heyman and Rosie Alison are producing, with Rosie Garnett as executive producer.

There’s no current news on casting or release date.

Follies has a a book by James Goldman and music & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The show was originally produced on Broadway in 1971 directed by Harold Prince, winning seven Tony Awards.

The show was last on Broadway in 2011 starring Bernadette Peters, Danny Burstein, Elaine Paige, Jan Maxwell and Ron Raines.

In Follies, the former Weismann’s Follies girls return to their old theatre one last time. At the centre of the story are two married couples on the brink of collapse. As the night goes on, egos are unleashed, lies are exposed, and secrets are revealed.

Heyday Films are best known for producing the Harry Potter series of films, and the Paddington films, including forthcoming Paddington in Peru, which will be released on 8 November 2024.

Their other production credits include Barbie, I Am Legend, Gravity and Marriage Story.

The National Theatre production of Follies was also filmed and streamed to cinemas.

Dominic Cooke is currently directing Imelda Staunton again, this time in a major new production of Jerry Herman’s Hello, Dolly!, now playing at the London Palladium until 14 September 2024.
