The shortlist has been revealed for the annual The Stage Awards 2024.

The awards celebrate theatrical achievements in West End, regional and fringe theatre in the UK and beyond.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held on 29 January 2024 at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London.

In the running for Theatre of the Year are Almeida Theatre, London; Birmingham Rep; Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, London; National Theatre, London; Sherman Theatre, Cardiff and Watermill Theatre, Newbury.

Submissions for the awards were opened up in October 2023, and anyone could submit suggestions. They were then supplemented by the views of a focus group of influential industry figures and senior writers for The Stage.

The shortlist and winners are decided by a judging panel that consists of Baz Bamigboye, entertainment columnist and international editor for Deadline; David Benedict, columnist, The Stage and critic, Variety; Lyn Gardner, associate editor, The Stage; Matthew Hemley, news editor, The Stage; Sam Marlowe, reviews editor, The Stage; Amanda Parker, columnist, The Stage, and arts consultant; Georgia Snow, chief reporter, The Stage; and lead judge, Alistair Smith, editor of The Stage).

Alistair Smith, editor of The Stage, said in a statement: “It’s wonderful to see such a diverse and widespread representation of exceptional talent in The Stage Awards shortlist. The recognition of organisations from different cities including Birmingham, Cardiff, Liverpool and Reading and across various performance mediums, ranging from traditional theatres to festivals, podcasts and online platforms, highlights the dynamic and evolving landscape of the performing arts in the UK. It is so encouraging to see so many varied organisations of all types continue to create outstanding work for audiences across the UK. Any of our shortlist are a testament to the creativity of, and dedication to, the industry and we look forward to celebrating with them all on January 29 at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.”

The awards are in association with Tysers Live.
