First-look production photos are in for Rebecca Frecknall’s new revival of The House of Bernarda Alba at the National Theatre starring starring Harriet Walter.
Directed by Olivier Award-winner Rebecca Frecknall (Cabaret, A Streetcar Named Desire), and adapted by Alice Birch (Normal People), the production is a radical reworking of Federico GarcÃa Lorca’s classic.
The cast includes Harriet Walter (Succession, Killing Eve) as Bernarda Alba; Isis Hainsworth (Rebecca Frecknall’s Romeo & Juliet) as Adela, the youngest of Bernarda’s daughters, Rosalind Eleazar (Slow Horses) as Angustias; Thusitha Jayasundera (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) as Poncia; Lizzie Annis (Extraordinary) as Martirio; Pearl Chanda (War of the Worlds) as Magdalena; Bryony Hannah (Call the Midwife) as Maid; Marcia Lecky (The Scottsboro Boys) as Prudencia; Eileen Nicholas (Village Idiot) as Maria Josefa; and Eliot Salt (Fate: The Winx Saga) as Ameila.
Also starring in the show are Catharine Humphrys, Asha Kingsley, Celia Nelson, Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart, Georgia Silver, Imogen Mackie Walker, Charlotte Workman, James McHugh and Michael Naylor; and the role of the Young Girl will be shared by Esma Akar, Livia Court and Sicily Rose De Bernardini will share the role of Young Girl.
Alongside Rebecca Frecknall, the creative team includes Isobel Waller-Bridge (Music), Merle Hensel (Set and Costume Designer), Lee Curran (Lighting Designer), Peter Rice (Sound Designer), Alastair Coomer CDG (Casting), Naomi Downham (Casting) and Lilac Yosiphon (staff director).
Playful Productions (Opening Night A New Musical) are co-producing the play, which is rumoured to be transferring to the West End following its run at the National Theatre.
The House of Bernarda Alba is now playing at the National Theatre, until 6 January 2024.
