Jessie Buckley and Eddie Redmayne to headline ‘Cabaret’ in West End

Jessie Buckley and Eddie Redmayne will star in a West End revival of Cander and Ebb’s classic musical Cabaret.

Oscar winner Redmayne will play Emcee, Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub – a seedy Berlin haunt in the final, care-free, anything-goes days of the Weimar Republic. Whilst Buckley, who recently appeared in Romeo & Juliet with The Crown‘s Josh O’Conner, Season 4 of Fargo, Chernobyl and Wild Rose, will play the Kit Kat Klub’s star, Sally Bowles.

Acclaimed director Rebecca Frecknall will helm the show which promises to be a reimagined production on the iconic musical. Frecknall’s breathtaking production of Tennessee Williams’s Summer And Smoke was considered a revelation at the Almeida Theatre and subsequent West End transfer at the Duke of York’s Theatre in 2019.

Rebecca Frecknall said “It’s such a privilege to have the opportunity to direct Cabaret, a show that has always been dear to my heart. It’s thrilling to be able to approach this classic and important musical at a time when its themes and atmosphere feel so contemporary and resonant. I’m in awe of my incredible creative team who have come together to create a bold new production as well as a new ‘Kit Kat Club’, a bespoke home where we can truly embrace and unlock the world of Cabaret for a new audience”.

One of the most successful musicals of all time Cabaret features the songs Wilkommen, Don’t Tell Mama, Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, Money and the title number. It has music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, book by Joe Masteroff. Premiering on Broadway in 1966 it became an instant hit and has remained a firm favourite the world over. It is based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play I Am a Camera which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s semi-autobiographical 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin.

The creative team will include House of Absolute dance artist Julia Cheng (choreography), Tom Scutt (set & costume design), Jennifer Whyte (musical supervision), Isabella Byrd (lighting) and Nick Lidster (sound).

Full casting, venue and dates to be revealed.
