‘Dreamgirls’ UK tour to open this December

Dreamgirls will embark on its first UK tour this December, it has been confirmed. The legendary Broadway and West End musical will open at Liverpool Empire on 14 December 2021 starring Nicole Raquel Dennis (Dear Evan Hansen) in the role of Effie White.

Premiering to critical acclaim on Broadway in 1981 it was another 30 years before the iconic show would open in London’s West End which it did in December 2016 at the Savoy Theatre. Glee’s Amber Riley headlined the London production, followed by American actress Marisha Wallace who has since become one of the West End’s leading ladies and will soon be seen appearing in Hairspray.

Often said – though much denied – to be loosely inspired by Diana Ross and The Supremes and her relationship with Motown records founder Berry Gordy, the show follows The Dreams, a singing group of young women living in the 1960s trying to find fame and fortune in a male dominated world. It has book by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, with additional material by Willie Reale.

The production has direction by Casey Nicholaw with set and costume design by Tim Hatley, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone, sound design by Richard Brooker, hair design by Josh Marquette and music supervision by Nick Finlow.

The tour opens at Liverpool Empire on 14 December 2021, before visiting Bristol, Milton Keynes, Sunderland, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Wimbledon, Nottingham, Norwich, Leeds, Canterbury, Plymouth, Llandudno, Aberdeen, Manchester, Oxford, Glasgow, Blackpool, Southampton, Northampton and Birmingham.

Tickets are now available to book.
