Mischief Theatre’s West End production of Magic Goes Wrong has delayed its return to London’s Vaudeville Theatre until October 2021.
The spell-binding comedy had been due to reopen for an eight-week run over Christmas, however due to the level of audience participation Producers felt it was out of step with current social distancing guidelines.
Producer Kenny Wax said: “Alongside the need for Stage 5 of the culture secretary’s roadmap allowing us to open up without social distancing and the need for a government backed insurance scheme, audience participation is right at the heart of the experience of Magic Goes Wrong.”
“We frequently bring patrons onstage to assist in the illusions as well as performing close magic tricks to them in their seats. This feels out of step with current coronavirus advice on this particular production until social distancing can be relaxed.”
Wax added: “We feel it is better to postpone the show until a time when it can be presented to its full potential.”
The UK tour of Magic Goes Wrong will open in the regions “as soon as practically possible once social distancing has been lifted”.
Producers also warned the threat of further lockdowns could put the shows long-term future at risk.
The venue will now stage Mischief Movie Night which sees audience members suggest a genre, location and title for a movie which is then improvised by the actors live on stage.
Jonathan Sayer, company director of Mischief, said: “After touring Mischief Movie Night to a host of socially distanced outdoor venues over the summer we’re so thrilled and lucky to be taking this next step in theatre and the West End’s recovery. We can’t wait to get back on stage indoors and provide some much needed cheer over the festive period.”
To comply with government guidelines, audience capacity has been reduced to enable social distancing with the venue implementing additional safety measures including temperature check and contactless ticketing.

Mischief Movie Night is booking from 9 December 2020 until 31 January 2021 at the Vaudeville Theatre, London.
