The West End premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical has been moved to Autumn 2021.
In a public statement, the show has said that: “We’re moving our London performance dates to Autumn 2021 to ensure the show is perfectly SPECTACULAR when it arrives! We cannot wait to see the West End shine bright like a diamond once more. To Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and Love! ”
Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Global Creatures and producer of Moulin Rouge! The Musical said of the change, “Whilst we’re disappointed to be opening a little later than originally planned, we are committed to bringing Moulin Rouge! The Musical to London and look forward to being part of a revived West End.”
The production was previously slated to open at London’s Piccadilly in March 2021, however due to the ongoing uncertainty in the theatre industry, the delayed opening on what is expected to be an expensive show is seen as a prudent move. It might even allow for the Piccadilly’s current occupant, Pretty Woman: The Musical to extend by a few months.
Based on on the 20th Century Fox Motion Picture by Baz Luhrmann, the musical features lavish, immersive sets and includes a numerous hits from the original film as well as new pop songs made famous over the last 20 years by Seal, Sia, Rihanna, Adele, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.
The show opened on Broadway in 2019 to widespread critical acclaim starring Aaron Tveit, Karen Olivo and Danny Burstein – in the roles originated on screen by Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman and Jim Broadbent. Most recently the Broadway production was afflicted by covid-19 with several members of the cast including Tveit and Burstein contracting the virus.
Casting for the West End premiere to be announced.
West End premieres which have also been postponed into 2021 include Sister Act: The Musical, Hairspray The Musical, To Kill A Mockingbird and Sunday In The Park With George.
