Andrew Lloyd Webber delays new musical ‘Cinderella’ over global crisis

Andrew Lloyd Webber has delayed the opening of his new Cinderella musical in London due to the unfolding global health crisis.

Cinderella was officially announced last month, and was due to open at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on 23 September 2020, with previews from 28  August 2020.

However, announcing that previews will now begin six-weeks later on 9 October 2020, Lloyd Webber said: “The show will go on sale next week as planned, but in the current global circumstances the creative team and I feel that this later opening date is wise.

“Full-scale pre-rehearsals of Cinderella will take place with our leading actors, as planned, throughout this month”.

The production will have an official press night on 28 October 2020.

Described as a complete reinvention of the classic fairytale, the production will star Carrie Hope Fletcher (Heathers, Les Miserables, The Addams Family) in the titular role with full casting to be announced.

The new musical will be directed by Laurence Connor (School of Rock,  Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), with an original score by Lloyd Webber, lyrics by David Zippel and a book by Emerald Fennell.

Cinderella will begin performances on 9 October 2020 at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, London.

Cinderella tickets will go on general sale on 20 March 2020.
