The Royal Shakespeare Company return to the Barbican, performing a trio of William Shakespeare’s works: As You Like It, The Taming of the Shrew, and Measure For Measure.
Artistic Director Gregory Doran transports the drama to 1900s Vienna where a ‘glittering waltz-time world gives way to a portrait of public hypocrisy’ (Guardian) in this ‘excitingly simple and vivid‘ (The Times) take on Shakespeare’s dark comedy of injustice, sexual politics and disguise.
When a young novice nun is compromised by a corrupt official, who offers to save her brother from execution in return for sex, she has no idea where to turn for help. When she threatens to expose him, he tells her that no one would believe her.
Measure For Measure will run from 12 November 2019 until 16 January 2020 at Barbican Theatre, London.
WHAT’S THE STORY?
In a Vienna heaving with sex and corruption, even the authorities are up to no good. The Duke has left deputy Angelo to clean up the city’s reputation, whilst he observes in disguise. Abusing his power, Angelo forces young nun Isabella to choose between saving her brother’s life or breaking her vow of chastity.
