The Olivier Award winning Donmar Warehouse production of City of Angels will return to the West End in 2020.
Josie Rourke, former Artistic Director of Donmar Warehouse, will revive her 2014 production at the Garrick Theatre with former cast members Hadley Fraser (Young Frankenstein), Rosalie Craig (Company) and Rebecca Trehearn (A Christmas Carol, Showboat).
Also joining the production in her West End debut will be US actress Vanessa Williams, best known to UK audiences for her tv work in shows such as Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives. The Emmy, Grammy and Tony nominee made her stage debut as ‘the woman’ in a 1985 production of One Man Band and has since appeared in productions of Kiss Of The Spider Woman, Carmen Jones, Into The Woods, Sondheim on Sondheim The Trip To Bountiful and After Midnight.
The cast also features Marc Elliott, Nick Cavaliere, Adam Fogarty, Mark Penfold, Rob Houchen, Joshua St Clair, Cindy Bellot, Sadie-Jean Shirley, Manuel Pacific and Ryan Reid.
Described as a musical love letter to the glamorous world of old Hollywood and film noir, the show has a score by Cy Coleman and David Zippel and a book by Larry Gelbart. Rourke has also managed to reunite the original creative team including choreographer Stephen Mear (Mary Poppins, Sunset Boulevard, White Christmas) and designer Robert Jones.
Josie Rourke said: “City of Angels was a landmark experience for me at the Donmar. We all longed to hear Cy Coleman’s classic score, and see this incredible design on a bigger stage.
“Nica’s passion for the show has brought about this reunion, and I’m very grateful that through her championing, audiences will have the chance to see this classic production in the West End.”
Burns added: “Only 17,500 people had the opportunity to see Josie Rourke’s outstandingly brilliant production of this terrific, multi-award-winning musical – the equivalent of only a month in a West End playhouse.
“It has taken five years to reunite the original creative team and finally give a wider audience the chance to see this sensationally sexy, musical masterpiece.”
City of Angels will run from 7 March 2020 until 5 September 202 at the Garrick Theatre, London.
