Jonathan Bailey will star in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George, coming to the Barbican Theatre in London in 2027.

This major London revival is directed by multiple Tony and Olivier Award winner Marianne Elliott (Company, War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) with design by Tom Scutt (Cabaret).

Tickets are currently expected to go on sale in Autumn 2026.

Jonathan Bailey returns to the stage

Jonathan Bailey takes on the role of visionary artist Georges Seurat. Most recently Bailey has been seen on the screen, starring as Fiyero in the record-breaking films Wicked (2024) and Wicked: For Good (2025). He has also been seen in Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), and as one of the recurring stars of hit Netflix series Bridgerton.

Sondheim and Lapine’s masterpiece follows painter Georges Seurat in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous work, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

Consumed by his need to “finish the hat,” Seurat alienates the Parisian bourgeoisie, distances himself from his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot—unaware that the cost of his artistic obsession will echo across generations, reverberating more than a century into the future.

This heartfelt musical features some of Sondheim’s most magical and enduring songs, including ‘Sunday,’ ‘Move On,’ ‘Finishing the Hat,’ ‘Color and Light,’ and the iconic ‘Putting It Together.’
