Anita Dobson and Maria Friedman join West End musical Fiddler on the Roof

New casting has been announced for Trevor Nunn’s West End production of Fiddler on the Roof.

EastEnders alum Anita Dobson (AnnieWicked) and Olivier Award-winner Maria Friedman (PassionRagtime) will take on the roles of Yente and Golde respectively from 18 June 2019.

Nunn’s five-star revival of the classic Broadway musical currently stars Andy Nyman (Ghost Stories, Hangmen) as Tevye, Broadway star Judy Kuhn as Golde and Louise Gold as Yente.

A defiant portrait of resilience, Fiddler on the Roof follows the joyous and heart-breaking story of the poor Russian-Jewish milkman Tevye, his wife and five daughters. When three of his strong willed daughters wish to marry for love, he must grapple with this loss of tradition and the scattering of his family.

First performed on Broadway in 1964, the show won 9 Tony awards and became the first musical theatre run in Broadway history to surpass 3,000 performances.

The musical features well-known songs including “Tradition”, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”, “Sunrise, Sunset” and “If I Were a Rich Man”.

The iconic piece has music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein. Choreography is by Jerome Robbins and Matt Cole, set design by Robert Jones, costume design by Jonathan Lipman, hair and make up by Richard Mawbey, lighting design by Tim Lutkin, sound design by Gregory Clarke, musical supervisions by Paul Bogaev and orchestrations by Jason Carr.

Fiddler on the Roof is booking until 2 November 2019 at the Playhouse Theatre.
