Matt Cardle will join the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar which transfers to London’s Barbican Theatre this Summer.
The former x-Factor winner and multi-platinum selling recording artist will play Pilate with Australian import Robert Tripolino, recently seen in RAGS at the Hope Mill Theatre, cast as Jesus.
Cardle made his West End debut in 2015 playing Huey Calhoun in Memphis, the role earned him the WhatsOnStage Award for Best West End Debut. He was most recently on stage in Baz Luhrmann’s West End musical Strictly Ballroom.
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical will also feature Ricardo Afonso (Strictly Come Dancing – The Professionals) in the role of Judas, Sallay Garnett (A Girl From Mogadishu) as Mary, Cavin Cornwall (Rip It Up, Disney’s Aladdin) as Caiaphas and Nathan Amzi (Heathers The Musical) as Annas.
Timothy Sheader’s production previously ran at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2016 and 2017. The piece will have design by Tom Scutt, choreography by Drew McOnie, musical supervision by Tom Deering, lighting design by Lee Curran, sound design by Nick Lidster for Autograph, musical direction by Ed Bussey and fight direction by Kate Waters.
Jesus Christ Superstar is booking from 4 July 2019 until 24 August 2019 at the Barbican Theatre, London.
