Strictly Ballroom The Musical will close in the West End following a seven month run at the Piccadilly Theatre.
Drew McOnie’s dazzling production of Baz Luhrmann’s film-to-stage musical opened in March starring Jonny Labey, Zizi Strallen and pop-star Will Young, with Matt Cardle taking over from Will Young in the last few weeks.
Whilst it received mixed reviews from the critics, audience reaction to the show has been over-whelmingly positive with nightly standing-ovations.
The sad demise of this show could be chalked up to audiences thinking the show is about ballroom dancing when it’s really a muscial comedy, parodying ballroom dancing and Australians, set to some of the greats pop tunes of all time.
Producers of the show announced today “Strictly Ballroom The Musical will play its final performance on Saturday 27 October, at the end of what will have been a seven month run. We are immensely proud of the production, led by our hugely talented cast and creative team, and have been thrilled by the standing ovations that audiences have responded with night after night. We would like to thank everyone involved for bringing this joyous new musical to the stage.”
Producers have yet to disclose whether the show will tour the UK.
