Robert Icke’s critically acclaimed Almeida Theatre production of Mary Stuart will transfer to the West End in 2018.
Juliet Stevenson and Lia Williams will reprise their roles for the limited run which begins performances on 13 January 2018 at the Duke of York’s Theatre.
Icke’s adaptation of Friedrich Schiller’s explosive political tragedy (written in 1800) deals with the relationship between Mary and Elizabeth I, and centres on an imaginary meeting between them.
In an insightful twist, Stevenson and Williams play both warring queens, decided by the toss of a coin at the beginning of each performance. The Observer (★★★★★) called their performances ‘electrifying’ with the Independent (★★★★) calling the play ‘extraordinarily gripping, edge-of-your-seat’.
