The King & I eyes West End transfer

Bartlet Sher’s Award winning Broadway production of The King & I will reportedly transfer to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s London Palladium in 2018.

Considered one of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, the old-school musical features much loved classics “Getting To Know You,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance,” “I Have Dreamed” and “Something Wonderful”.

Inspired by Margaret Landon’s novel Anna and the King of Siam, the musical is set in 1860s Bangkok, with the story following the relationship of the King and British schoolteacher Anna Leonowens who is employed to tutor the wives and children of the King.

Sher’s Broadway revival began its run at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre on 12 March 2015 playing 538 performances, with the final performance being 26 June 2016.

The production starred Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe and won four 2015 Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical and Best Costume Design of a Musical.

The musical was meant to transfer in 2016/2017 however casting and theatre availability reportedly held up the transfer.

Casting is yet to be confirmed however Sher has indicated he wanted Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe to lead the show.
