Richard Madden will not return to Kenneth Branagh’s Romeo and Juliet

Richard Madden has been forced to withdraw from Kenneth Branagh’s production of Romeo and Juliet at the Garrick Theatre.

As previously reported, Madden suffered an ankle injury last month which has not healed as quickly as hoped. Doctors have ordered further rest and as such he will not return for the final weeks of the production.

Freddie Fox will continue to play Romeo until the production closes on 13 August 2016. Fox was parachuted into the role after Madden’s understudy also suffered a leg injury and was unable to perform. Fox joined the play on 26 July 2016 following a 48 hour period of rehearsals.

Romeo and Juliet runs until 13 August 2016 at the Garrick.
