Cameron Mackintosh – Man of steel

Our question of the day, and it’s a biggie I promise you, is how does Cameron Mackintosh manage to sit through Les Miserables after 25 years?

Sir Cameron Mackintosh

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fabulous show that moves me every time I see it, but I’ve only seen it about 7 times.

Seeing him at Nick Jonas’s first night in Les Mis last night at the Queen’s Theatre, he looked very happy to be there, as well he might given the tremendous scoop of securing one of the world’s biggest boy stars to pop themselves into your show (for only three weeks – and also at the O2 on 3 October).

I’m sure Mr Mackintosh often follows the Hollywood film premiere technique and ducks out of a side door after swinging down the red carpet and pressing flesh in the foyer. But more often than not, Cameron is there through it all.

We also realise that he is so close to the show that presumably every flag waving, barricade moving moment, every inflection in One Day More, is something to note. But 25 years worth, across thousands of cast changes and hundreds of international productions?

Mr Mackintosh, we salute you.
