History of Few Good Men

A Few Good Men is a masterclass in courtroom drama. Sorkin’s explosive script crackles with wit, urgency and moral complexity as two lawyers face off against the military-industrial machine.

The play had its world premiere at the Heritage Repertory Theatre at the University of Virginia’s Department of Drama in September 1989, before it transferred to the Kennedy Center. The original Broadway stage production opened at the Music Box Theatre in New York in November 1989, and Sorkin adapted his work three years later into a screenplay for the 1992 feature film of the same name.

What is A Few Good Men about?

The story focuses on military lawyer Daniel Kaffee, who is known for his charm, wit and uncanny talent for closing cases before they ever reach trial. He prefers deals over court battles, charm over confrontation.

But when he’s assigned to defend two young Marines accused of the murder of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay, his strategy is upended. Enter Lt. Commander Joanne Galloway – a by-the-book Navy lawyer determined to prove the men’s innocence and expose the truth.

As they dig deeper, they uncover a cover-up that reaches to the highest levels of the military. What follows is a collision course with the entire chain of command, a test of principles, and a question at the heart of military justice: what is more important – the order that keeps institutions functioning, or the truth that sets individuals free?

What begins as a routine defence case becomes a crusade against institutional corruption and military silence.
