Kristin Scott Thomas and Stephen Mangan lead Conor McPherson’s new adaptation of Chekhov’s final play The Cherry Orchard, directed by Ian Rickson, at the Harold Pinter Theatre until 9 January 2027.

Production photos have been released for The Cherry Orchard, Ian Rickson’s new staging of Chekhov’s last play, ahead of its opening night tonight. Kristin Scott Thomas plays Lyubov Ranevskaya, with Stephen Mangan as Lopakhin.

The story follows Lyubov as she returns to her childhood estate after years abroad, only to find the family home and its beloved cherry orchard under threat. As old loyalties falter and new ambitions rise, a world of privilege begins to crumble.

This version is a new adaptation by Conor McPherson, who previously worked with Rickson on The Weir in 1997 and Uncle Vanya in 2020.

Both leads are reuniting with their director. Scott Thomas worked with Rickson on The Seagull in London and on Broadway, winning an Olivier for her Arkadina, while Mangan last worked with him on Pinter’s The Birthday Party in 2018.

They’re joined by Vinette Robinson as Varya, Peter Wight as Gaev, Karl Johnson as Firs, Jeff Rawle as Pishchik, Jack Riddiford as Trofimov and Anastasia Martin as Anya, with Ruby Bentall, Megan Cusack, Noof Ousellam and Shubham Saraf completing the company.

Chloe Lamford designs the set, Sussie Juhlin-Wallén the costumes, Bruno Poet the lighting and Tom Gibbons the sound, with music by Stephen Warbeck.
