Michael Grandage returns to the National Theatre for the first time since 2010 with a new production of Suddenly Last Summer in the Olivier Theatre.

Emma Corrin (The Crown) is set to star as Catharine Holly, alongside Harriet Walter (The House of Bernarda Alba) as Violet Venable, in Tennessee Williams’ rarely performed masterpiece, a taut, unsettling study of memory, denial and the lengths a family will go to protect its carefully constructed image.

Wealthy New Orleans widow Violet Venable is determined to preserve the memory of her late son, Sebastian, exactly as she wishes it to be remembered. When her niece, Catharine Holly, returns from a traumatic trip abroad with Sebastian — the trip during which he died — telling a version of events Violet cannot accept, Violet enlists a young doctor, Cukrowicz, to perform a lobotomy that she hopes will silence her niece’s disturbing account for good.

As the doctor probes deeper into what really happened last summer, the truth behind Sebastian’s death — and the disturbing nature of his life — begins to surface. Tennessee Williams’ rarely performed masterpiece is a taut, unsettling study of memory, denial and the lengths a family will go to protect its carefully constructed image.
