Nadia Fall, Artistic Director and CEO of The Young Vic in London has unveiled an ambitious new season for 2026 & 2027.

The season, which runs from September 2026 to July 2027, promises a mix of “adventurous new theatremaking and reimaginings of classic work,” according to Fall.

Thelma & Louise: A New Musical

As reported earlier today, the season kicks off with the world premiere of Thelma & Louise: A New Musical (3 September to 24 October 2026).

Adapted by the original screenwriter of Ridley Scott’s hit MGM road trip movie, Callie Khouri, and featuring music by indie-icon Neko Case, the production stars West End favourites Amy Lennox (Cabaret) and Rachel Tucker (Wicked) as Thelma and Louise. Produced in association with Sonia Friedman Productions, this “visceral rollercoaster” is now one of the most anticipated shows of the year.

Ben Whishaw and Kathryn Hunter in Eurotrash

In more road trip news, BAFTA-winner Ben Whishaw (Paddington) is confirmed to return to The Young Vic stage in Eurotrash (13 November 2026 to 9 January 2027).

Reunited with the legendary Kathryn Hunter (Black Doves), the pair play a mother and son on a darkly comedic road trip through the Swiss Alps. This English-language premiere, adapted from Christian Krachtโ€™s bestseller, reunites the creative team behind the theatre’s previous hits Kafka’s Monkey and The Emperor.

Shedinburghโ€™s London debut

Expanding on yesterday’s announcement regarding its Edinburgh return and London debut, Fringe venue Shedinburgh will also make its inaugural London residency in The Young Vic’s Maria Studio (19 September to 10 October 2026).

The festival will showcase over 40 shows, featuring artists such as Sara Pascoe, Rosie Jones, and Inua Ellams.

Main House Highlights

Beyond the headline premieres, The Young Vic’s Main House features a slate of international projects for 2026 and 2027:

  • La Distance (22 January to 13 February 2027): The UK premiere of La Distance from Tiago Rodrigues, Director of Festival dโ€™Avignon. This intimate sci-fi drama is set in 2077, and explores a father-daughter bond across the distance between Earth and a collapsing Mars.
  • dissent (5 Mar โ€“ 24 Apr 2027): A world premiere from Olivier and BAFTA winner debbie tucker green. The “explosive” new play interrogates compliance and humanityโ€™s capacity for monstrous behaviour.
  • August Wilsonโ€™s Gem of the Ocean (14 May to 10 July 2027): Artistic Director Nadia Fall directs the first UK staging in 20 years of this seminal work by Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson. Set in 1904 Pittsburgh, the drama is a powerful exploration of resistance and redemption.

The Maria Studio

The Maria Studio at The Young Vic continues to be a hub for experimental and award-winning work. Alongside the month-long Sheninburgh residency this autumn, the venue will also feature:

  • Girls (22 October to 21 November 2026): Winner of the 2026 JMK Award, Ewa Dina makes her debut directing Theresa Ikokoโ€™s (Rocks) story of three friends kidnapped in Nigeria.
  • The Brown Sugar RAP Party (14 October 2026): Inua Ellams brings a special edition of his global event to the Maria, honouring the legacy of Neo-Soul founder Dโ€™Angelo.

Reflecting on the state of the world and the role of the theatre, Nadia Fall stated:

โ€œOur 2026/7 season welcomes powerful international storytelling into our unique shape-shifting spacesโ€ฆ Each of these new productions are cathartic, poignant, wickedly funny and above all profoundly human stories.”
