Disney has found a new way to make its hit Broadway show Aladdin even more of a fairy tale night out – this time with an actual engagement ring.

Over on Broadway, the company has unveiled a set of official proposal packages linked to Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York.

Promising couples a moment straight out of a romantic musical, they get a post-show proposal on the stage itself after the audience has cleared out. The moment comes with professional photos and room for a small group of guests.

It’s not just a quick dash onto the stage, either. Disney’s add-on experience also includes a private tour of the theatre, plus a personalised “names in lights” congratulatory message on the theatre’s marquee on 42nd Street.

Snacks and drinks vouchers are also part of the deal.

The obvious question for London: would something like this also work in the West End?

The idea isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. West End theatres have been steadily expanding their VIP and hospitality experiences in recent years – think hosted arrivals, lounges, and premium add-ons – and some venues already sell dedicated VIP packages around shows.

What Broadway’s Aladdin is doing is taking that one step further: turning a behind-the-scenes perk into a highly “Instagrammable” life moment.

We also have no shortage of romantic West End musicals to choose from – queen among them being current London hit Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

There’s no news on whether Disney is looking at their London shows to roll out this new initiative, including The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre and Hercules at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. There is also intense speculation that Disney will bring their forthcoming out-of-town tryout of The Greatest Showman The Musical to London at some point soon.

Even then, a West End version would need some careful choreography offstage. Getting people onto a stage after a performance sounds glamorous, but it also involves safety, staffing, scheduling, and permissions, and London theatres are famously tight on turnaround time once the curtain comes down.

Still, it seems clear that London theatres are increasingly not just selling tickets, but experiences. And if Broadway can introduce on-stage proposals, then some of London’s biggest shows must be asking: why not us?
