Award winning actor and director Kenneth Branagh to stage a season of plays at the Garrick theatre.
In the tradition of theatrical actor-managers Kenneth Branagh is reportedly to stage a season of plays at the Garrick theatre. Whilst the full programme is still being finalised, it is expected to include Shakespeare’s tragicomedy The Winter’s Tale, well-liked by directors and audiences, a new play and another classic. The season which is expected to run for 3 months from October, will see Branagh direct some productions and appear in others. Fiery Angel theatre producers will general manage with top casting director Lucy Bevan casting productions.
Kenneth Branagh, last seen on the West End stage in Michael Grandage’s Ivanov in 2008, follows Grandage and Jamie Lloyd in staging a season of plays. There is also the possibility of Branagh bringing his successful Manchester International Festival production of Macbeth to the Alexandra Palace in North London.
Branagh will form a new theatre company, 23 years after he and partner David Parfitt disbanded the Renaissance Theatre Company, a company, which with help from Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Richard Briers, Geraldine McEwan, Samantha Bond and former wife Emma Thompson, had great success with stagings of Romeo and Juliet, Public Enemy, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, As you like it, Hamlet, Look Back in Anger,Uncle Vanya and Coriolanus.
