Northern Ballet brings the extraordinary story of Anne Lister to life – better known as Gentleman Jack.
Gentleman Jack is choreographed by award-winning Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, and with new music by Peter Salem.
This major new ballet explores the story of this fiercely independent woman who defied societal norms and expectations, presenting a unique opportunity to tell her story through the powerful medium of dance.
Anne Lister (1791-1840) is often referred to as ‘the first modern lesbian’, and her diaries have become best-sellers and were turned into a hit BBC & HBO TV series by acclaimed screenwriter Sally Wainwright, starring Suranne Jones.
Gentleman Jack played at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London from 19 to 23 May 2026.
Anne Lister. A powerful Yorkshire woman, it was only after her death when her secret diaries were decoded that a truly exceptional life was uncovered. Described by some as the “first modern lesbian”, Anne lived, dressed and loved as she desired, not as 19th century society expected her to. With her words dancing across the page, she vividly chronicled her adventures, heartbreaks and triumphs
