Every love story has a final chapter. Alfie and Julie’s has been one of music, laughter, and heartache — and on one early morning in June, they must write their ending.
End marks the final production programmed under former National Theatre Director Rufus Norris, bringing a fitting close to a significant creative era at the venue.
Owen, best known for his Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Emmy-winning performances in Closer, The Knick, and The Bourne Identity, takes on the role of Alfie. He was last seen on stage in 2019 as Reverend Shannon in The Night of the Iguana at the Noel Coward Theatre and previously starred on Broadway in M. Butterfly and Old Times.
Saskia Reeves, who was Olivier-nominated for her performance in Separation (Comedy Theatre) plays Julie. She currently appears in the Apple TV+ hit Slow Horses and is known for Luther, Shetland, and Our Kind of Traitor.
Rachel O’Riordan is joined by an acclaimed creative team, including set and costume designer Gary McCann, lighting designer Sally Ferguson, sound designer Donato Wharton, intimacy director Bethan Clark, and casting director Alastair Coomer CDG.
Playing in the Dorfman Theatre at the National Theatre, End runs from 3 November 2025 to 17 January 2026.
The National Theatre’s new season went on sale earlier this month including Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons) with Lesley Manville, Aidan Turner & Monica Barbaro; Man and Boy with Ben Daniels; and, gripping new play The Authenticator.
Current productions include Ballet Shoes and a new production of The Playboy of the Western World starring Derry Girls’ Nicola Coughlan and Siobhán McSweeney.
