Powerful drama The Shawshank Redemption is returning to the UK stage in 2025, in a new tour.
The play is based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”, which was famously turned into the 1994 Oscar-nominated movie starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
The tour of The Shawshank Redemption starts at Windsor Theatre Royal on 3 September 2025, and then tours to Darlington, Truro, Blackpool, Belfast, Lichfield, Hull, and New Brighton, with further tour dates to be announced shortly.
The story examines desperation, injustice, friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum-security facility.
The stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption is by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns, and directed by David Esbjornson.
The wider creative team includes design by Gary McCann and lighting design by Chris Davey.
Casting for the play is to be announced, and it is produced by Bill Kenwright Ltd.
