Winners have been announced for the 2025 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s play Purpose has been named Best Play for the 2024-25 season.

The Best Musical award has gone to Maybe Happy Ending, which has music by Will Aronson, lyrics by Hue Park, and a book by Will Aronson and Hue Park.

New awards announced for this year, the first time since 1962, are Best Individual Performance and Best Ensemble Performance.

The Best Individual Performance award went to Andrew Scott for Vanya, which first premiered in the West End.

The Best Ensemble Performance award went to the cast of Liberation.

Special Citations were awarded to Cole Escola for Oh, Mary!; Cats: The Jellicle Ball; and David Greenspan for lifetime achievement.

The awards ceremony will be held on 15 May 2025.

There are 23 members, including President Adam Feldman (TimeOut New York), Vice President Zachary Stewart (TheaterMania), Treasurer Helen Shaw (The New Yorker), and David Barbour, David Cote, Joe Dziemianowicz, Greg Evans, Rhoda Feng, David Finkle, Elysa Gardner, Robert Hofler, Sara Holdren, Charles Isherwood, Chris Jones, Soraya Nadia McDonald, Jackson McHenry, Johnny Oleksinski, Brittani Samuel, Frank Scheck, David Sheward, Tim Teeman, Elisabeth Vincentelli and Matt Windman. Emeritus members are Melissa Rose Bernardo, Brian Scott Lipton, Michael Sommers, Steven Suskin and Linda Winer.

The awards have been running since 1936.

Awards season in New York is well underway, with last week’s Tony Awards 2025 nominations announced. The Tony Awards ceremony is on 8 June at Radio City Music Hall in New York, hosted by Cynthia Erivo.

The UK’s Critics’ Circle announced its London awards in March, with Robert Icke’s Oedipus winning three awards.
