The National Theatre in London has announced a new production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, starring Hiran Abeysekera.
Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) is set to star as Hamlet in the production, which is playing at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre, from 25 September to 22 November 2025.
This new production will be directed by the National’s new Deputy Artistic Director Robert Hastie (Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Operation Mincemeat).
The cast also features 2024 Ian Charleson Award-winner and 2025 Ian Charleson Award nominee Francesca Mills as Ophelia, with Alistair Petrie as Claudius, Ayesha Dharker as Gertrude, Geoffrey Streatfeild as Polonius, Hari MacKinnon as Rosencrantz, Phil Cheadle as Marcellus, Siobhan Redmond as First Player, and Tom Glenister as Laertes.
The production promises to be a fearless contemporary take on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, and a sharp, stylish and darkly funny reimagining.

Joining Robert Hastie in the creative team are set and costume designer Ben Stones, lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun, sound designer Alexandra Faye Braithwaite, casting directors Alastair Coomer CDG and Martin Poile CDG.
Hamlet was the first production at the National Theatre when it started at the Old Vic in 1963, and was first produced on the South Bank in 1976.
Hamlet is running at the National Theatre from 25 September to 22 November 2025.
