Big new West End musical Made in Dagenham launched in London this week.
Helmed by Almeida artistic director Rupert Goold, the cast and creative team came together in London to showcase the musical ahead of its 9 October 2014 opening at the Adelphi Theatre.
The star of the show – at the launch and within the show – is Gemma Arterton. Arterton has risen quickly to become a major Hollywood and stage star, and takes on the lead role of Rita O’Grady in the show – played in the movie by Sally Hawkins.
Five songs from the new show were performed at the showcase, and Rupert Goold was in bullish mood, telling the media that his aim was to put British musicals back on the map.
Some of the former striking women who worked at the Ford factory, and were immortalised in British movie Made in Dagenham, were present at the launch.
The creative team behind the show is strong, with a book by One Man, Two Guvnors playwright Richard Bean, music by James Bond composer David Arnold and lyrics by Jerry Springer The Opera’s Richard Thomas.
