The Play That Goes Wrong announce cast for 2025 Australian & New Zealand tour

The hit comedy The Play That Goes Wrong has revealed casting for its 2025 Australian and New Zealand tour, which opens in Wellington, NZ, this April.

Leading the cast is Jonathan Martin (Something Rotten!, Little Shop of Horrors at Court Theatre NZ) as Chris Bean, the ambitious director of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, who also stars as Inspector Carter in their disastrously staged murder mystery. Brodie Masini (tick, tick… BOOM!, Josephine Wants to Dance) plays Jonathan Harris, the ill-fated actor portraying Charles Haversham, a murder victim whose biggest challenge is staying still.

The ensemble also features Joe Kosky (Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), Tom Hayward, Stephanie Astrid John (The Grinning Man, Twelfth Night), Sebastian Pitruzzello (Stop/Over), Eds Eramiha (Vegas, Chief of War), and Olivia Charalambous (Les Misérables, Spring Awakening). Rounding out the company are Jack Buchanan (Don Juan), Anthony Craig (Elvis: A Musical Revolution), and Kira Josephson (The Girl on the Train, Legally Blonde) as understudies.

The tour kicks off in Wellington on 19 April 2025, followed by stops in New Plymouth (30 April – 4 May), Christchurch (6–11 May), and Auckland (14 May – 1 June). It then continues in Australia, playing Sydney (19 June – 3 August), Gold Coast (6–10 August), Toowoomba (12–15 August), Newcastle (19–31 August), and Melbourne (3–21 September 2025).

Now celebrating ten years in London’s West End, The Play That Goes Wrong continues its run at the Duchess Theatre, where it recently received royal approval—King Charles and Queen Camilla attended a performance in London last week. Meanwhile, the off-Broadway production at New World Stages has just been extended through 31 August 2025—a remarkable feat for a show that has entertained New York audiences for seven years.

Created by Mischief Theatre, the Olivier and Tony Award-winning comedy follows an amateur theatre company’s calamitous attempt to stage a 1920s murder mystery. As the performance spirals into chaos—complete with collapsing sets, missed cues, and misplaced props—audiences are guaranteed an evening of relentless laughter.

What’s Next for Mischief Theatre?

Mischief’s next major production is The Comedy About Spies, making its West End debut at the Noël Coward Theatre on 14 April 2025. Set in 1960s London, this madcap Cold War caper is filled with mistaken identities, double-crossing agents, and physical comedy in signature Mischief style. At the Royal Variety Performance, the team debuted a sneak preview and the first public performance of the show which went down a storm with the audience.

The cast of The Comedy About Spies includes original Mischief Company members Dave Hearn, Chris Leask, Henry Lewis, Charlie Russell, Henry Shields, Greg Tannahill, and Nancy Zamit, joined by Adele James.

Later in 2025, Mischief will also stage Christmas Carol Goes Wrong, a brand-new production where the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society takes on Charles Dickens’ festive classic—with predictably disastrous results. The show will tour the UK from November including a London season at the Apollo Theatre, running from 6 December to 25 January.
