Military Wives The Musical to premiere at York Theatre Royal

York Theatre Royal has announced the world premiere of Military Wives The Musical, a new stage show written and directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Debbie Isitt. Inspired by the true story of the Military Wives choir and based on the hit 2019 film Military Wives, the musical will begin performances on 10 September, and run until 27 September 2025.

The production is being staged in association with Everyman Theatre Cheltenham and Buxton Opera House. Isitt, best known for her Nativity! film and stage franchise, expressed her excitement about the upcoming premiere, stating: “This inspirational new musical about a group of women who triumph against all odds has been a joy to create. It is so exciting to be working with York Theatre Royal on such a funny and exhilarating new musical, and I can’t wait to share it with audiences.”

The musical follows a group of women whose husbands and partners are deployed on military duty, leaving them isolated and searching for purpose. Led by the determined Olive, they form a choir and embark on a journey of camaraderie, resilience, and unexpected friendships. The show promises a mix of pop, rock, and power ballads, designed to engage audiences with laughter, emotion, and music.

Debbie Isitt has an extensive background in film and theatre, having directed hit Christmas films including Nativity! and Christmas on Mistletoe Farm. She also helmed the recent musical I Should Be So Lucky, based on the songs of Stock, Aitken and Waterman, which toured
