Mark Rosenblatt’s acclaimed new drama Giant has got closer to a Broadway season.
In an interview with Baz Bamigboye in Deadline, the star of Giant, John Lithgow, confirmed that Broadway is in the producer’s sights for the show.
“If all goes well, we’ll do it on Broadway too. It’s that good a play,” Lithgow tells Baz.
The drama, which is directed by Nicholas Hytner, enjoyed incredible reviews from London’s theatre critics when it premiered at London’s Royal Court Theatre in September.
In November, the show announced it would be transferring into the West End, playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 26 April to 2 August 2025.
Already announced in the cast are John Lithgow (3rd Rock From the Sun), playing author Roald Dahl; Elliot Levey (Cold War, Patriots, Good) as Tom Maschler, Dahl’s British Jewish Publisher; Olivier Award-nominee Rachael Stirling (The Divine Mrs S) as Felicity Crosland, Roald Dahl’s fiancée; and Richard Hope (Hijack) as Wally Saunders, Dahl’s handyman – all of whom reprise their roles from the Royal Court production.
Further casting for the show is to be announced.
Inspired by true events, Mark Rosenblatt’s drama Giant delves into the thin line between thoughtful discourse and harmful rhetoric. Blending dark humour with sharp insight, the play paints a complex portrait of Roald Dahl, a dangerously charismatic figure, examining the consequences of inflammatory public statements and the impact of antisemitic remarks in the media.
In the Deadline piece, Lithgow also speculates on a screen adaptation of the stage drama, saying: “Inevitably there are those conversations,” he says, “but I think there are sort of stations of the cross that a great property goes through — Royal Court, West End, Broadway — and then the logical next thing is some other medium. But it’s such a piece of theater. It is kind of hard to imagine it any other way at the moment. Who knows?”…
The Royal Court production, which ran from 20 September to 16 November 2024, also starred Romola Garai (Scoop) as Jessie Stone, Dahl’s Jewish American publisher; and Tessa Bonham Jones (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) as Hallie, the Dahl family’s housekeeper.
Giant will be produced in the West End by Brian and Dayna Lee, Stephanie Kramer and Nicole Kramer, Josh Fiedler, and Robyn Goodman.
Giant is directed by Nicholas Hytner, with design by Bob Crowley, lighting design by Anna Watson, and sound design by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite. Casting is by Arthur Carrington, with general management by Short Street Productions, and the executive producer is Mark Rubinstein
Giant is playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 26 April to 2 August 2025.
Director Nicholas Hytner’s next project is Richard II, playing at the Bridge Theatre in London starring Jonathan Bailey, from 10 February.
