Broadway’s hit musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has announced exciting new casting.
Ryan McCartan (Heathers The Musical, Wicked, Disney Channel’s Liv & Maddie) will take on the role of Jay Gatsby, stepping into the spotlight from 21 January 2025. His debut marks the start of The Great Gatsby Centennial Celebration, a year-long series of events honouring the 100th anniversary of Fitzgerald’s timeless novel.
The celebration kicks off on 16 January 2025, with a special gala performance and Gatsby-style soirée at The New York Public Library. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Library for the Performing Arts, aligning Broadway excellence with literary heritage.
Ryan McCartan: TV & stage credits
Known for his versatility and charisma, McCartan first made waves on the New York stage as JD in Heathers The Musical, earning acclaim for his performance and the Original Cast Recording. His Broadway credits include starring as Fiyero in Wicked and Hans in Disney’s Frozen. Additional stage work includes Scotland, PA at Roundabout Theater Company and Faust: The Concert.
McCartan’s screen work is equally impressive, with appearances in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (dir. Kenny Ortega), Emma’s Chance (Sony Pictures), and Disney Channel’s Liv & Maddie. Other television credits include The Winchesters, Freakish and Royal Pains.
Centennial Celebration: A Gatsby Affair
To commemorate the novel’s 100th anniversary, The Great Gatsby will host a gala on 16 January 2025, featuring a benefit performance starring Tony nominees Jeremy Jordan (Newsies, Smash) and Eva Noblezada (Hadestown, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon). This event will toast Jordan’s final week (last performance 19 January 2025) as Jay Gatsby before McCartan assumes the role.
Roberta Pereira, Executive Director of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, expressed her excitement:
“We are honored to partner with The Great Gatsby Broadway production as we celebrate both the centennial of this literary masterpiece and the Library’s 60th anniversary in 2025.”
A Star-Studded Cast
The current Broadway cast features Jeremy Jordan as Jay Gatsby, Eva Noblezada as Daisy Buchanan, Noah J. Ricketts (Frozen) as Nick Carraway, Samantha Pauly (Six) as Jordan Baker, and John Zdrojeski (Good Night, Oscar) as Tom Buchanan.
Critical Acclaim and Creative Team
Hailed by Entertainment Weekly as “a great, big Broadway extravaganza,” The Great Gatsby transports audiences to the Roaring ’20s through an electrifying jazz and pop-infused score. With music and lyrics by Tony nominees Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen, a book by Kait Kerrigan, and direction by Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), the production is a visual and musical spectacle. The show is produced on Broadway and in the West End by Chunsoo Shin, the acclaimed Korean musical producer and five-time winner of Korea’s top theatrical award.
