Theatre Royal Bath has announced that Maxine Peake will star in a new production of John Patrick Shanley’s award-winning drama Doubt: A Parable.
Directed by Lindsay Posner (Noises Off, A View From The Bridge, The Deep Blue Sea), Doubt will play Theatre Royal Bath’s Ustinov Studio from 7 February to Saturday 8 March 2025.
Doubt: A Parable is centred on a Catholic school in the Bronx, 1964. Sister Aloysius, the strong-minded principal has her suspicions that one of her teaching fathers is abusing a vulnerable pupil. Without proof, she is forced to take matters into her own hands. As the elements of her investigation come invigoratingly together like clockwork, the gripping story poses fascinatingly nuanced questions of moral certainty.
Maxine Peake is an award-winning actor whose theatre credits include the title role in Hamlet, Miss Julie, Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, Winnie in Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days and Hester Collyer in The Deep Blue Sea.
Her TV credits include Dinnerladies, Shameless, Silk, The Village, The Hollow Crown, Inside No. 9, Black Mirror, Three Girls, Anne, The Village and See No Evil. Her upcoming projects include Disney/FX TV series Say Nothing.
Maxine’s film credits include Peterloo, The Theory of Everything, Funny Cow and Words of War.
John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Best New Play Tony Award in 2005, and was turned into a hit film in 2008 starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Cherry Jones (Succession), who recently starred in The Grapes of Wrath at the National Theatre, also picked up a Best Actress Tony Award for starring in Doubt.
The play was revived on Broadway earlier this year, starring Liev Schreiber, Amy Ryan and Quincy Tyler Bernstine.
Doubt: A Parable is playing at the Ustinov Studio at the Theatre Royal Bath from 7 February to Saturday 8 March 2025.
Lindsay Posner’s recent Bath production of The Deep Blue Sea is transferring into the West End next year, playing the Theatre Royal Haymarket from 7 May 2025 starring Tamsin Greig.
