Get tickets to The Devil May Care – A New Play Inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s The Devil’s Disciple

I had an inkling from an early age that the Devil was my natural master, captain and friend”

Callum Woodhouse  (All Creatures Great and Small, Channel 5; The Durrells, ITV) stars as Richard Conroe, the play’s titular ‘Devil’ character in this electrifying new adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s The Devil’s Disciple at Southwark Playhouse Borough this winter.

Against the chaos of The Philippine–American War, otherwise known as “America’s First Vietnam”, the world premiere of The Devil May Care is a timely exploration of Western power, the impact it leaves behind, and the thorny question of who’s really good and who’s really evil in war. Tackling the hypocrisy and prejudices of authorities and institutions, Mark Giesser’s tense drama delves into the very human and personal challenges that are brought up by conflict.

Giesser’s The Devil May Care follows Richard Conroe, a disreputable American trader, who is mistaken for a treasonous English minister and arrested. Both Conroe and the real minister’s wife, Judith, have to decide if they should reveal his true identity – potentially saving Conroe, but condemning the minister to death.

The Devil May Care runs from 8 January to 1 February 2025 at Southwark Playhouse Borough in London.

I had an inkling from an early age that the Devil was my natural master, captain and friend”

It’s 1899, and the United States is growing in power – fighting a war against the Philippine Islands to prevent their independence. Judith, the wife of a disgraced English minister wanted for treason, witnesses the arrest of disreputable American trader and “disciple of the devil” Richard Conroe. The American army is convinced he is her husband – but when Judith tries to reveal their mistake, Richard denies her claims and refuses to save himself from execution.

Why would an innocent man insist on sacrificing himself for a stranger?
