A brand new, temporary 1,300 seat theatre has been proposed for Canary Wharf in London.
Proposed by the Canary Wharf Group, the venue would be operated by Troubadour Theatres, who already run the successful Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, home to Starlight Express.
The new theatre in Canary Wharf would be located at Wood Wharf to the east of the Canary Wharf complex, where thousands of new homes have been built, with more to come. Two giant pontoons have recently been built to house new restaurants including a Hawksmoor restaurant.
Canary Wharf has developed over the last few years from an office and financial complex to a major work, shopping, entertainment and residential area.
Other cultural attractions at Canary Wharf include the Museum of London and a cinema, but the area has never had a theatre.
The proposed Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre would open in summer to autumn 2025.
The new theatre complex would include a 1,300-capacity auditorium which can be configured to suit different types of production, plus back of house facilities to include offices and dressing rooms, front of house services including foyers, cloakrooms and restrooms, audience bars on ground, first and second floors, and a restaurant area for around 150 covers.
Canary Wharf Group is now proposing the scheme ahead of submitting a formal planning application.
