Saturday 14 September 2024 is proving to be a big date for London theatre, with four musicals all closing on the same night.
Two big classic Broadway shows, Hello, Dolly! and Kiss Me, Kate are leaving town next month on the 14th, plus modern classic The Baker’s Wife playing Off-West End, and new musical comedy Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder! in the West End.
Hello, Dolly! starring Imelda Staunton closing soon
The biggest show, playing the London Palladium in the West End for a limited season, is Jerry Herman’s classic musical Hello, Dolly!
This lavish and spectacular show sees Olivier and BAFTA Award winner Dame Imelda Staunton (The Crown, Harry Potter, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd) play matchmaker extraordinaire Dolly Gallagher Levi, in this joyous West End revival directed by Dominic Cooke (Follies).
An all-star cast also features Olivier Award winner Jenna Russell (EastEnders), Andy Nyman (Ghost Stories), Tyrone Huntley (Jesus Christ Superstar), Emily Lane (Frozen), and Harry Hepple (Follies).
Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate to close on 14 September
Also closing on Saturday 14 September is another classic Broadway musical, this time Cole Porter show Kiss Me, Kate at the Barbican Theatre in London.
This major revival by Broadway’s Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher boasts a show-stopping Cole Porter score packed with classic tunes, and packed full of sparkling wit, gun-toting gangsters, sparring actors, romantic entanglements, and incredible dancing.
The company of 50 is led by Broadway star Stephanie J. Block, TV favourite Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty), Charlie Stemp (Crazy For You), Georgina Onuorah (The Wizard of Oz), Nigel Lindsay (The Capture), Hammed Animashaun (The Wheel of Time) and Peter Davison (Doctor Who).
The Baker’s Wife is leaving London next month
Also exiting the stage in September is the Menier Chocolate Factory’s revival of The Baker’s Wife by multi-award winning composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) and writer Joseph Stein (Fiddler On The Roof).
Set in a provincial French village that is turned upside down, the show features a starry cast including Lucie Jones (Les Miserables, Wicked, Waitress) as Geneviève, the Baker’s Wife, and Clive Rowe (Sister Act The Musical) as the Baker.
The show has choreography by recent Olivier Award winner Matt Cole (Newsies) and is directed by Gordon Greenburg (Barnum).
Final weeks for hit Edinburgh show Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder!
A huge hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, cult new musical Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder! has enjoyed a crowd-pleasing run at the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre in London.
Produced by the Olivier Award-winning producers of Fleabag, the comedy musical sees BFFs Kathy and Stella host Hull’s least successful true crime podcast. But when their favourite author is killed, and they are thrust into a thrilling whodunnit of their own, literally anything can happen – and does!
A hugely talented cast is led by Bronté Barbé (Newsies), Rebekah Hinds (Oklahoma!), and Imelda Warren-Green (Doctor Who: Time Fracture).
