The Menier Chocolate Factory in London has announced its Christmas and Winter 2025 production will be a revival of Mel Brooks’ comedy musical The Producers.
The show will be directed by Tony Award-winner Patrick Marber (Leopoldstadt), with casting and further creatives to be announced.
The Producers is an adaptation of Mel Brooks’ cult comedy movie, with music and lyrics by Brooks, and a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan.
The original Broadway production of The Producers scored 12 Tony Awards, the most awarded to any musical, and was a huge hit for its lead stars Nathan Lane as Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick as Leo Bloom.
Nathan Lane revived his role as Max in the 2004 West End production, which played the Theatre Royal Drury Lane for two years.
The musical prides itself on being an “equal opportunity offender”, skewering Broadway traditions, and setting the standard for outrageous, in-your-face humour.
The musical is centred on scheming Broadway producer Max Bialystock and his mousy accountant Leo Bloom, as they purposely produce the biggest flop in Broadway history!
The Producers is running at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 26 November 2024 to 1 March 2025.
Other forthcoming Patrick Marber projects include What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank at the Marylebone Theatre from 4 October, starring The West Wing’s Joshua Malina.
Now playing at the Menier Chocolate Factory is The Baker’s Wife starring Lucie Jones and Clive Rowe, playing to 14 September 2024; followed by The Cabinet Minister adapted by and starring Nancy Carroll, from 21 September 2024.
