Jez Butterworth’s drama The Hills of California will open on Broadway this September.
Following its world premiere at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London, The Hills of California, directed by Sam Mendes (The Lehman Trilogy, The Motive and the Cue) will transfer to Broadway for a limited engagement at the Broadhurst Theatre (235 W. 44th Street) this fall.
Previews will begin 11 September 2024 with opening night scheduled for 29 September 29 2024.
The show marks Tony and Olivier Award winner Butterworth’s latest play since the multi-award winning The Ferryman, also directed by Oscar, Tony, and Olivier Award winner Mendes.
The US transfer is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, No Guarantees Productions, Neal Street, Brian Spector, and Sand & Snow Entertainment, with Stephanie P. McClelland
The creative team for the US production is Rob Howell (scenic and costume design), Natasha Chivers (lighting design), Nick Powell (composer, sound design and arrangements), Ellen Kane (choreography), Candida Caldicot (musical supervision and arrangements), Amy Ball (UK casting director, Verity Naughton (UK young persons’ casting director), Jim Carnahan CSA, JV Mercanti (US casting director) and Zoé Ford Burnett (associate director).
Broadway casting for The Hills of California will be announced at a later date.
The London production stars Laura Donnelly (The Ferryman, The Nevers, Outlander), Leanne Best (Sweat, Ripper Street, Line of Duty), Ophelia Lovibond (Minx, W1A, The Effect) and Helena Wilson (Vogue World, Jack Absolute Flies Again, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern) as the Webb family, plus Bryan Dick, Shaun Dooley, Corey Johnson, Richard Lumsden, Natasha Magigi, Nancy Allsop, Sophia Ally, Alfie Jackson, Lara McDonnell, Lucy Moran and Nicola Turner.
The London production is now in its final weeks. The play opened in February 2024 and scored positive reviews from the London critics. Its final performance at the Harold Pinter Theatre is on 15 June 2024. Get The Hills of California tickets in London.
