The Kiln Theatre in London has announced casting for their world premiere production of Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan’s Peanut Butter & Blueberries.
The two-hander stars Usaamah Ibraheem Hussain (Brown Boys Swim, Surface) as Bilal; and Humera Syed (Great Expectations, The Village, The Stranger) as Hafsah.
Playing this August, the show is directed by Sameena Hussain, and explores how to love when the weight of the world is on your shoulders.
This is the debut play from author, poet and educator Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan, whose books include Seeing for Ourselves: And even stranger possibilities, and Tangled in Terror: Uprooting Islamophobia.
The creative team also includes Designer Khadija Raja, Lighting Designer Rajiv Pattani, Sound Designer Helen Skiera, Casting Director Julia Horan CDG, Production Manager Marty Moore, and Costume Supervisor Maariyah Sharjil.
In the play, Hafsah and Bilal are not looking for love. She has her faith, her books, her dreams. Bilal… well he’s just trying to get through uni. Studying in London, far from their hometowns of Bradford and Birmingham, they find common ground over a peanut butter and blueberry sandwich. Just as their connection is growing, the past and social realities become harder to ignore. Between opportunities, obligations and injustices, will they be able to choose each other?
During the run of Peanut Butter & Blueberries, there will be prayer space available on the Kiln Theatre premises for audiences to use after the show.
Peanut Butter & Blueberries is playing at the Kiln Theatre from 8 to 31 August 2024.
