News about Frankie Goes to Bollywood

Frankie Goes to Bollywood to play the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall this summer
New musical Frankie Goes to Bollywood is transferring to London's Southbank Centre this summer 2024. The show will play the Queen Elizabeth Hall from 31 July to 18 August 2024. Frankie Goes to Bollywood is currently running at Watford Palace Theatre until 11 May 2024, and then plays HOME in Manchester from 15 to 25 May, followed by a UK tour to Hayes, Hornchurch, Wolverhampton, Bradford, Windsor, Coventry and Cardiff. The show is presented by Rifco Theatre Company (Britain’s Got Bhangra), known for celebrating and reflecting contemporary British Asian experiences, and follows Frankie as she is suddenly immersed in the world of Bollywood stardom, in a show about being British in Bollywood and exploring what it takes to get to the top. The musical takes inspiration from true stories of Brits in Bollywood, including the experiences of Rifco's writer and Artistic Director Pravesh Kumar, who has written and directed the show. The cast includes Laila Zaidi, Helen K Wint, Shakil Hussain, Gigi Zahir, Navin Kundra and Katie Stasi. The show has a concept and book by Pravesh Kumar, songs and music by Niraj Chag, and songs and lyrics by Tasha Taylor Johnson. Frankie Goes to Bollywood is a big, bold, romantic all-singing-all-dancing tale of heroes and villains, and the breath-taking spectacle of Bollywood. [ngg src="galleries" ids="1643" display="pro_horizontal_filmstrip"] Pravesh Kumar MBE said in a statement: “Frankie is a multi-layered piece of theatre. It offers a sumptuous British spin on the glorious stories of Bollywood; a breathtakingly colourful journey of romance, sweeping songs and vibrant dance, juxtaposed with exploration of the darker undercurrent within the culture. This is a celebration of everything glorious and spectacular about Bollywood and Indian culture while highlighting less-positive experiences women face. I wanted to highlight this issue, because it’s men’s responsibility to shine a light on sexism, and to call it out whenever and wherever they see it. I hope this show is a catalyst.Frankie Goes to Bollywood is both an ode, and a call to action. An ode to the films we grew up with - movies that brought us laughter and tears and belting our lungs out in the shower. It’s also a nudge to interrogate the culture we’ve grown up with, and come together to make it better, brighter, and ask important questions about the deeply ingrained sexism. We have been blown away by responses to the show - the pre-sales for our opening venue have been phenomenal to the point where Frankie has almost outsold presales for any other performance at Watford Palace Theatre. We are so excited to come to Southbank and continue meeting what is clearly pent-up demand for authentic South Asian theatre in the UK". Frankie Goes to Bollywood is playing the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London from 31 July to 18 August 2024. More about tickets to Frankie Goes to Bollywood at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London
