Award-winning musical Matilda The Musical, which has proved a hit in London and New York, is to be turned into a blockbuster new film.

But the movie isn’t set to hit the big screen until 2019 after a contractual arrangement with the Broadway production which blocks a screen adaptation for six years. Our sources tell us that the RSC and producers of the musical are working behind the scenes to try and get this time reduced.
Director of the show Matthew Warchus told Baz in this week’s Daily Mail that the screenplay for the movie will be written by the show’s book writer, acclaimed playwright and screenplay writer Dennis Kelly.
New songs by Tim Minchin may also be a possibility.
Warchus has promised a slightly different take to the story on film, with Matilda’s wild imagination leading to all sorts of possibilities in a movie version, but without losing the sense of mischief and anarchy of the riotous stage production.
Matilda The Musical continues to do great business in the West End and on Broadway.
