New Convent Garden fringe venue the Stage Door Theatre has revealed another new project.
The new venue above the Prince of Wales pub on Drury Lane is set to revive Claudio Macor’s 1992 play The Tailor-Made Man, directed by Stage Door Theatre’s new artistic director Robert McWhir.
The play is the true story of the Hollywood studio system in its heyday, centred on William “Billy” Haines, a popular MGM movie star in the 1920’s who was fired by studio boss Louis B. Mayer because he was gay and refused to give up his lifelong partner, Jimmie Shields, to marry silent screen star Pola Negri.
Casting is to be announced. The creative team will als include designer David Shields, and the show is produced by LAMBCO Productions.
Writer Claudio Macor said in a statement: “Thirty years ago a friend gave me a copy of Kenneth Anger’s book Hollywood Babylon. As I was reading the various Hollywood scandals Kenneth Anger so vividly described I came across “The White Legion and the Purple Poodle” and first discovered the story of William “Billy” Haines and Jimmie Shields.”
The Tailor-made Man will run at the Stage Door Theatre from 17 April to 18 May, and then 4 to 12 June 2024.
The venue’s very first production will be a revival of Stephen Sondheim revue Marry Me a Little, conceived and developed by Craig Lucas and Norman René. Playing at the Stage Door Theatre from today, 28 February, to 13 April 2024. The show stars Shelley Rivers (The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard) as ‘Woman’, alongside Markus Sodergren (Heathers, Beauty and the Beast) as ‘Man’.

Other forthcoming productions include a revival of contemporary queer drama Sauna Boy, from 29 May to 1 June 2024.
