Alan Bennett’s acclaimed play The History Boys is set for a 20th anniversary revival at Theatre Royal Bath this August.
Directed by Seán Linnen, Bennett’s modern classic will run at Theatre Royal Bath from 22 August to 31 August 2024, before embarking on a national tour.
Set against the backdrop of A-Level results day at Cutler’s Grammar School in 1980s Sheffield, The History Boys delves into the lives of eight spirited teenagers who aspire to secure spots at Oxford and Cambridge universities, and the teachers assisting them to do this.
Alan Bennett said: “How very pleased I am that The History Boys are still here twenty years on finding a new audience. ‘Pass it on’ is Hector’s message – I hope the playgoers feel the same!”
The original National Theatre production launched the careers of James Corden, Dominic Cooper, Russell Tovey, Jamie Parker, Sacha Dhawan and Samuel Barnet, with the late Richard Griffiths playing their history teacher. Nicholas Hytner’s production was also made into an acclaimed film.
Casting for the production is to be announced.
The full schedule of The History Boys UK tour is also to be confirmed, although initial tour dates include: Plymouth Theatre Royal (17 – 21 September 20240, Malvern Festival Theatre (15 – 19 October 2024) and Aberdeen His Majesty’s Theatre (22 – 26 October 2024).
The Times has also revealed that the tour will include Theatre Royal Nottingham, the Cheltenham Everyman, and the Cambridge Arts Theatre.
